Battenfeld: Socialist win in New York City lurches Democrats further left

With the stunning reemergence of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic socialists in the New York City mayor’s election, the Democratic Party is lurching even further to the left, leaving them even more alienated and out of touch.

You can’t make this stuff up.

The winner of the Democratic primary, Zohran Mamdani, is a radical Muslim millennial socialist who calls Israel’s war in Gaza “genocide” and has said he would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visited New York City.

Mamdani has also refused to denounce antisemitic slogans, has vowed to make all city buses free, would freeze rents, open city-run grocery stores and plans to establish an agency that would build publicly-owned affordable housing.

To pay for all his $10 billion worth of promises, Mamdani wants to raise the corporate tax rate and impose a 2% surcharge on millionaires. Wonder how the titans of Wall Street feel about that?

He also would gut the New York City Police Department and replace it with a Department of Community Safety emphasizing mental health and outreach.

Mandani also has close connections to Boston Mayor Michelle Wu. They are both millennials and unapologetic progressives. He has praised Wu in a published interview and said he thinks of her as a role “model” mayor. He cites her free bus pilot program as a model for his free bus program.

The headline in the New York Post Wednesday? NYC SOS.

Mamdani was endorsed by AOC and Sen. Bernie Sanders over former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who conceded defeat on Tuesday.

But few predicted Mamdani would actually win.

Progressives of course are celebrating this harrowing outcome, saying it could be a blueprint for winning future elections. Mamdani built a coalition of motivated young voters as well as enough minority voters to beat Cuomo, who won among older voters.

But the win for the socialist means it will most likely lead to a fractured Democratic Party and a gift for Republicans and President Donald Trump, who now can claim Democrats are too far left for middle America.

That’s how they’re going to run against the next MAGA Republican? With socialists?

Mamdani’s victory means AOC may be emboldened now to run for president in 2028, setting up a huge intra-party battle between establishment old guard moderates and progressives.

It’s also great news for Massachusetts and other lefty pols, because they could be in line for plum posts if AOC reaches the White House.

Will Michelle Wu be Secretary of Transportation? She’s already messed up the roads because of bike lanes so it’s not a stretch.

Will Ayanna Pressley be head of Homeland Security?

Ilhan Omar for Secretary of State?

Elizabeth Warren obviously would be director of Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Maura Healey the new border czar? She’s done such a great job with migrants in Massachusetts.

And because of her experience with the justice system, Tania Fernandes Anderson could get FBI Director or Treasury Secretary, it’s a tossup.

But poor Ed Markey will get left out because he’s part of the “gerontocracy” that AOC wants to drum out of office.
