Massachusetts firefighters transported to hospital for heat exhaustion as temps hit 100+
Two firefighters battling a house blaze were transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion, as temps surged past 100 degrees on Tuesday.
Norfolk Fire and Police on Tuesday morning responded to a house fire at 3 Main St., when a passerby alerted authorities.
Firefighters found heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof. Crews located heavy fire along the back of the house.
Due to the heavy fire and heat conditions, a second and third alarm were struck — bringing additional help to the scene.
Two firefighters ended up being transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion.
Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. The National Weather Service urges people to chill in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun, but that’s not possible for first responders.
No other injuries were reported at the Norfolk scene.
The State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office were investigating the blaze.
Also during the brutally hot Tuesday, Attleboro firefighters battled a structure fire. Firefighters at about 3:30 p.m. responded to a reported structure fire at 118 Fairway Drive.
First-arriving crews encountered smoke showing from a two-story residence.
The fire originated in the garage and extended into the attic, making it challenging for crews to access and extinguish.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Due to heavy heat and smoke conditions, crews were forced to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the structure and release trapped gases.
Firefighters contended with not only the intense heat from the fire itself, but also record setting outdoor temps.
“Fighting fire is always demanding, but extreme weather like today’s makes it even more dangerous,” said Assistant Chief Dennis Perkins. “Our crews pushed through brutal heat in full gear to stop this fire from spreading further. It’s a testament to their training and dedication to protecting this community.”
