Massachusetts state lawmaker ‘lucky’ to avoid serious injuries in hit-and-run

A Massachusetts state lawmaker says he’s “lucky” to have avoided serious injuries on his commute to Beacon Hill after a Quincy man allegedly crashed into him and fled the scene.

Rep. Steven Xiarhos — a Republican who represents Sandwich and parts of Barnstable and Bourne — was involved in the hit-and-run on Route 3 in Braintree, while en route to the State House from Cape Cod, at about 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

“Another driver, operating recklessly at a high rate of speed, struck the rear of Rep. Xiarhos’ vehicle on the highway and narrowly missed colliding with a nearby motorcycle,” Xiarhos’ office posted on social media Thursday afternoon.

Xiarhos told the Herald that the Massachusetts State Police arrested Jacob Bennett, 34, in Quincy after the suspect fled the scene. The representative did not suffer injuries that required a hospital visit, and he was able to participate in the day’s formal session.

His vehicle, however, did sustain “significant damage,” his office stated.

“I am grateful to the MA State Police for their swift response to the crash, and I am thankful this incident was not even more serious,” Xiarhos told the Herald. “I also want to sincerely thank the citizens who stopped to help and quickly provided information to assist the investigation.”

Bennett has been charged with operating under the influence of drugs, leaving the scene of a crash and negligent operation after license suspension. He is due to be arraigned in Quincy District Court Friday morning after being released on $1,000 cash bail.

“Incidents like this are a powerful reminder of how fast things can happen on the road,” said Xiarhos, who spent 40 years with the Yarmouth Police Department. “Please stay alert, drive responsibly, and look out for one another.”
