Disgraced former Congressman George Santos weighs in on Karen Read verdict: ‘Spirit animal’
Reaction to the Karen Read verdict spread like wildfire across the nation, even catching the attention of disgraced former New York Congressman George Santos, who called her his “spirit animal.”
Moments after the jury foreman read the verdict, which cleared Read of every count against her except for drunken driving, Santos joined those around the country in reacting to the development.
“(Expletive) You to all the corrupt prosecutors that manipulated evidence to entrap an innocent American!” Santos stated in a post on X at 3:05 p.m. Wednesday. “Karen Read is innocent and we all knew that, thank you to the jury!”
Santos again posted about the verdict later Wednesday night, saying, “Karen Read is my new spirit animal!”
The former representative is due to report to prison on July 25, months after he was sentenced to over seven years in prison for federal wire fraud and aggravated identity theft, which he pleaded guilty to last summer.
Santos served in Congress for less than a year before becoming just the sixth member of the House to be ousted by colleagues.
The Republican admitted to deceiving donors and stealing the identities of nearly a dozen people, including his family members, to fund his winning campaign. His plea deal included agreeing to pay roughly $580,000 in penalties.
The Read case fascinated true crime fans and anti-police corruption activists across Greater Boston and the country, being featured in a slew of documentaries on prominent television networks and streaming services.
Jurors cleared Read, 45, of murder, manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident, resulting in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe.
