Good luck Massachusetts drivers: ‘Heavy traffic’ on Mass Pike expected
Make sure you have a good podcast if you need to travel on the Pike this weekend.
Traffic is expected to be brutal from Friday night until Monday morning, as MassDOT implements weekend lane closures on the Mass Pike in Newton and Weston.
The lane closures and temporary Commuter Rail shutdown is to replace the I-90 bridge over the MBTA Worcester Commuter Rail — known as the Newton/Weston Bridge Replacement and Rehabilitation at the I-90/I-95 Interchange project.
“MassDOT is expecting heavy traffic along I-90 at I/95 Friday, June 20, 2025, 9 p.m. to Monday, June 23, 2025, 5 a.m.,” EZDriveMA alerted customers ahead of the busy summer weekend.
“Drivers should expect significant delays on I-90 during these weekends,” the advisory added. “If possible, drivers should plan ahead, avoid the area, and seek an alternate route. Real-time messaging boards will be along the interstates providing travel times through the area.”
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction between Exit 123 in Weston and Exit 125 in Newton.

Significant traffic impacts are anticipated between Boston and Framingham. Police details, lane markings, temporary barriers, traffic cones, signage, and other tools will be used to control traffic and maintain safe work zones.
The Newton-Weston bridge replacement project is upgrading eight bridges at the Mass Pike/I-95 interchange. The bridges are currently safe, but they’re aging and deteriorating.
Five bridges will be replaced, one will be rehabilitated, and two will have their superstructure replaced.
Buses will replace the last Worcester Commuter Rail train on Friday and replace all trains on Saturday and Sunday along the Worcester Commuter Rail Line between Framingham and South Station.
Also, buses will replace the last Amtrak train on Friday, all trains on Saturday and Sunday, and the first train on Monday along the Lake Shore Limited Route between Albany and Boston.
