Taunton holds off Bishop Feehan, keeps title defense dreams alive

DARTMOUTH — Down by a run in the sixth inning in a state semifinal. A dynastic run hanging in the balance, too.

Pressure? Yes, but it brought out the best in Taunton.

The top-seeded Tigers made it back to the Division 1 state final in dramatic fashion Wednesday by overcoming a one-run deficit late to top No. 5 Bishop Feehan, 2-1, at UMass-Dartmouth.

Taunton (24-0), which is riding a 55-game winning streak, is now just one win away from a fifth consecutive state title and will face the winner of No. 2 Wachusett and No. 6 Lincoln-Sudbury in the championship bout.

“It’s a lot of pressure, but at the same time, we got to thrive under that pressure, especially as a solid team,” said Taunton sophomore Ashlyn Hebert, who delivered the hit of the game. “People are looking to shoot us down. So we’ve got to take advantage of those moments and I feel like we all did that. We all had those chances and we executed when we needed to.”

Feehan (19-6) put Taunton on the ropes when it pushed a run across in the top of the sixth with Rebecca Fielding scoring on a wild pitch.

But there was no visible drop in confidence from Taunton. The Tigers simply showed their championship mettle and roared back in the bottom half of the frame. Aniyah Bailey and Brooke Aldrich got the inning started with back-to-back singles before two straight bunts plated a run and set the stage for Hebert.

Hebert made the most of her opportunity, ripping a two-out double — the only extra-base hit of the game — to score Aldrich and put the Tigers on top.

“We saw that she was taking good swings. She’s had a lot of great quality at-bats,” Taunton coach Michelle Raposo said. “For her to come up big, it was well-earned in that spot.”

Taunton star Cate Larson, who was locked in a pitchers’ duel with Feehan’s Mylee Ramer (six innings, six hits, three strikeouts) for a majority of the contest, had to work through a high-pressure situation to secure the win.

The Georgetown-bound Larson, who uncharacteristically issued four free passes and scattered four hits to go along with 11 strikeouts, walked the leadoff batter in the seventh before recording two outs. A hit batsmen put the tying and go-ahead runs on base, but Larson bore down to get a groundout to advance Taunton to a place it is very familiar with.

“It doesn’t get old,” Raposo said. “The grit that this team has is unbelievable. They can get down and they don’t let it affect them.”
