St. John’s Prep one victory from fifth straight state title after topping Lincoln-Sudbury

BURLINGTON — It’s typically frowned upon to rely on chalk in the postseason.

But it’s tough to go against St. John’s Prep at this point.

Sophomore Beckett Lee had a career game, pacing the second-seeded Eagles with a hat trick as they cruised into the Div. 1 boys lacrosse finals for a fifth straight season with a convincing 12-5 drubbing of No. 3 Lincoln-Sudbury at Burlington High.

“It felt great,” Lee said. “It’s my first contribution to a state championship (run). I’m just along for the ride. It has been fun.”

Some felt Wednesday’s bout might be a barn-burner, given the history of both schools. St. John’s Prep (21-1) quickly silenced its critics, as the Eagles rattled off the game’s first five goals, three of which came in the opening five minutes. Beckett Lee, Will Crawford and Jack Quigley each registered a goal, as they seized a 3-0 lead right out of the gate.

Later on, with his team leading by five goals, Lee netted his second tally with 4:24 to go in the second quarter. From there, St. John’s Prep took a 7-1 advantage into the half.

When the third quarter began, St. John’s Prep kept the pedal to the medal. With 9:24 to play, Lee fired a shot over his back shoulder, sniping twine for his third goal as the Eagles pulled further away with an 11-3 advantage.

“I dodged from X, and swung it around,” Lee said. “Luke (Kelly) dodged off the second pass with a great look, and I just had open space. Tried to get one off (and converted).”

St. John’s Prep had 10 different goal scorers in the victory, continuing a trend that has spanned all season.

Madden McGowan also paced St. John’s Prep with a goal to go with a pair of assists. Cam and Ryan McCarthy each netted a goal and an assist. Meanwhile, Crawford finished 16-for-19 in the faceoff circle for the Eagles.

“For me personally, I think this game is always more stressful,” said St. John’s Prep coach John Pynchon. “We’ll lean into a little bit of gratitude over the next 72 hours, and be thankful for what we have. We’ll talk about how this is going to end, and that can be emotional for our seniors. We have to deal with that, knowing that it’s going to end. Then, just focus on what got us here. We’re excited to get three more days together.”
