The VW Tiguan is now the best-selling vehicle in Switzerland year-to-date.

New car sales in Switzerland recede -6.1% year-on-year in May to 19,969, leading to a year-to-date volume off -7.3% to 91,323. 4WD sales are down -10.2% to 9,943 and 49.8% share vs. 52.1% last year. Petrol is down -28.6% to 4,913 and 24.6% share vs. 32.4% a year ago and diesel freefalls -43.2% to 1,386 and 6.8% share vs. 11.5%. In contrast HEVs (including mild hybrids) are up 9% to 7,189 and 36% share vs. 31%, PHEVs surge 29.5% to 2,304 and 11.5% share vs. 8.4% and BEVs gain 17.1% to 4,177 and 20.9% share vs. 16.8% in May 2024. Year-to-date BEV sales are up 7.1% to 18,390 and 20.1% share vs. 17.4% over the same period in 2024.

In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-2.1%) reclaims the lead for the 2nd time this year ahead of Skoda (-0.5%) holding a round 10% share this month, its highest since April 2024. BMW (-14.1%) skids to #3 but remains #1 year-to-date above VW. Mercedes (-9.3%) and Audi (-12.4%) also struggle in the remainder of the Top 5. Toyota (+8.9%), Hyundai (+7%) and Dacia (+4.2%) defy the negative context with solid YoY gains. Cupra (+168.4%) is by far the best performer in market at #12.

Model-wise, the VW Tiguan (+10.9%) signs its first win of the year, and this is enough to lift it to the YTD top spot. The Skoda Kodiaq (+43.4%) surges 9 spots on April to #2, it now ranks #3 YTD vs. #8 over the Full Year 2024. In contrast with its situation in most worldwide countries, the Tesla Model Y (+4.3%) is actually up YoY to #3 overall, but ranks #5 YTD with sales down -55.2% vs. #1 last year. The Skoda Karoq (+19.2%) and Toyota Yaris (+35.3%) post outstanding results to round out the Top 5. Notice also the new Cupra Terramar up 9 ranks on last month to a record #12.
