Botulism cases tied to Botox injections at Milton spa, state warns
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health warned the public of a growing cluster of botulism cases linked to Botox injections performed in Milton on Sunday — advising anyone who recently had the procedure done at Rodrigo Beauty to contact the department “immediately.”
The department is investigating 10 cases of “suspected iatrogenic botulism” associated with the cosmetic procedures done at the spa Rodrigo Beauty, located at 464 Granite Ave., DPH said.
Iatrogenic botulism is a “rare but serious illness caused by botulinum toxin spreading beyond the injection site, potentially leading to life-threatening symptoms,” state officials said.
“Anyone who received Botox injections at Rodrigo Beauty between May 1 and June 4 this year is strongly urged to contact the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at 617-983-6800 or their local board of health immediately, even if they are not currently experiencing symptoms,” DPH said.
Symptoms of botulism include “blurred or double vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, or breathing difficulties,” DPH warned. The department advised patients and healthcare providers should be “alert for symptoms” following Botox injections.
