Boston teenager accused of threatening MBTA bus driver with a knife
A city teen is facing several gun and assault charges after he allegedly threatened a T bus driver with a knife and threw a lighter at the driver.
The 15-year-old from Boston was allegedly carrying a gun with a high-capacity magazine during the assault, according to the Suffolk DA’s office.
MBTA Transit Police responded to a call for an assault on an MBTA bus driver last Friday at around 9:12 p.m.
The T bus driver reported that three juveniles boarded the bus at the Bennington and Trident streets stop without paying the fare — leading to an argument. The driver continued on his route.
Then as the minors got off the bus at the Walley and Gladstone streets stop, the 15-year-old allegedly tossed a cigarette lighter at the driver. The lighter struck the plexiglass partition, but did not hit the driver.
The driver got up, and as he stood by the bus door, the 15-year-old allegedly pulled out a knife while stepping toward him.
The juveniles then walked toward Gladstone Street, and the driver flagged down a police officer. The driver did not sustain any injuries.
Officers spotted and arrested the 15-year-old without incident. During the arrest, one of the other juveniles offered to take the 15-year-old’s backpack, which the officers didn’t allow.
During booking, officers found a 9mm pistol with a high-capacity magazine containing 11 rounds in the backpack.
“There are numerous disturbing elements here, all made even more disturbing given the age of the person charged,” Suffolk DA Kevin Hayden said.
“Threatening anyone with a knife, in this case an MBTA driver responsible for safe transportation of passengers, is intolerable,” he added. “The addition of an untraceable firearm with a high-capacity magazine makes the incident even more troubling.”
