More than 4,000 Dacia Sandero found a buyer in Spain in May.

Another excellent result for new car sales in Spain in May with registrations up 18.6% year-on-year to 112,820 units. This is the largest May volume since pre-pandemic 2019 (129,777). This is the 9th consecutive month of year-on-year gains in Spain. Year-to-date, sales are now up 13.6% to 431,919. This is however still down -10.2% over the 5 months of pre-pandemic 2019. Sales are pushed up by the demand stemming from the need to replace the vehicles damaged by the DANA storm (“Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos”) with registrations in the Valencian region up 87% year-on-year to 16,160.

All channels show double-digit growth: private sales are the most dynamic at +22.2% to 45,749 with rental sales up 18.8% to 32,794 – indicating a strong start of the summer touristic season – and company sales up 13.7% to 34,227. Year-to-date, private sales are up 16.5% to 208,028, rentals up 15.4% to 126,903 and company fleets up 8.7% to 155,780. The main event this month is the surge of electrified vehicle sales (BEV+PHEV), up a fantastic 138% year-on-year to 21,861 and a record 19.4% share vs. 9.7% in May 2024. Year-to-date registrations are up 71.7% to 77,562 and 15.8% share vs. 10.5% over the first five months of 2024.

Toyota (+14.8%) continues to dominate the brands charts with 8.3% share, while Volkswagen (+19.2%) is back up three spots on last month to #2 with 6.6% share, snapping the #3 spot in the YTD order as a result. Renault (+12.5%) stays in third place above sister brand Dacia (+46.8%) soaring to its best share since January at 6.1%. Hyundai (+6.2%), Kia (+28.7%) and Seat (+27.8%) lurk just behind. Peugeot (-3.4%) underperforms at #8, but MG (+114.3%) scores another excellent performance at #9, a ranking it also holds year-to-date. Below, Cupra (+69.6%), Skoda (+44.6%), Mercedes (+25.8%) and BMW (+24.4%) stand out. BYD (+1099%) breaks all records at #19 with 2,434 sales and 2.2% share. We welcome Chinese fare Bestune at #48 with 39 sales.

Over in the models charts, spectacularly the entire Top 8 outpaces the market growth. The Dacia Sandero (+60.8%) is the faraway leader above the Renault Clio (+28.1%) up seven spots on last month to #2. The MG ZS (+47.2%) stays in third place and ranks #2 year-to-date. The Peugeot 208 (+129.5%) is up to #4 and holds the 5th spot year-to-date vs. #19 over the Full Year 2024. The Seat Ibiza (+19.1%) rounds out the Top 5 ahead of the Toyota C-HR (+42.4%), Seat Arona (+24.7%) and Toyota Yaris (+22.9%). The Toyota Corolla (+2.8%) is the odd one out at #9 and ranks #8 year-to-date vs. #2 over FY2024. The Citroen C4 (+136%) closes the Top 10 in impressive fashion.
