Red Sox lineups: Veteran reliever to injured list, strike-thrower recalled
Ahead of Friday’s series opener in Atlanta, the Red Sox officially placed veteran reliever Liam Hendriks on the 15-day injured list and recalled fellow right-hander Nick Burdi from Triple-A.
The club announced right hip inflammation for Hendriks, whose IL stint is retroactive to May 28. MassLive previous reported that the veteran righty has been dealing with multiple hernias dating back to early in the month.
The Red Sox signed Hendriks to a two-year, $10 million incentive-laden deal (with a mutual option for 2026) during spring training last year, while he was rehabbing after Tommy John surgery in August ’23. After missing the entire ’24 campaign, he made his team debut on April 20.
Consistency has eluded Hendriks, who owns a 6.59 ERA over 14 appearances this season. Those numbers encompass his debut – two earned runs in one inning – followed by eight consecutive scoreless appearances in which he yielded just four hits, four walks, and struck out seven over nine frames.
In his subsequent five appearances since May 16, however, Hendriks yielded nine runs (eight earned) on five hits, including Christian Yelich’s walk-off grand slam earlier this week in Milwaukee. In a span of just 3.2 innings, he’s struck out four, issued three walks and been charged with two losses.
The roster move also comes days after Hendriks publicly called out the Red Sox for not using him.
This is the second time the Red Sox are calling upon Burdi to face the Braves this month. The veteran righty, 32, made a pair of scoreless appearances against them at Fenway last weekend, entering with two outs and the bases loaded in the top of the ninth and recording the final out in his club debut on May 16, and a scoreless sixth and seventh in Rafael Devers’ walk-off win the following day.
