Editorial: Dems are many things, popular isn’t one of them

Political pundits and party insiders have been warning Democrats since November’s election: get your act together or lose more voters.

It’s not working, according to a new poll from The Economist/YouGov.

The poll, conducted in late May, shows the GOP with a net favorability rating of negative 11%, while Democrats follow 10 points behind, with a net favorability rating of negative 21%.

Both parties are in the basement, popularity-wise, but Republicans are at least sitting on the cellar stairs.

Among Americans surveyed, 41% view Republicans favorably and 52% view them unfavorably, whereas only 36% of Americans view Democrats favorably and 57% view them unfavorably.

This is surprising, on the face of it.

To hear mainstream media and social media tell it, throngs of Americans are rising up against Donald Trump, Elon Musk, Republicans in general, cuts in government spending prompted by the Department of Government Efficiency and arrests of illegal immigrants.

Liberals have been crying in their beer since Nov. 5, and gleefully “resisting” any chance they can, especially with a spate of public anti-Trump rallies. Some have gone the vandalism-is-OK-if-we-do-it route, torching and vandalizing Teslas as a perceived blow to Musk.

And you would not go broke betting on the chances the terms “fascist” and “Nazi” will appear on protest signs and chants.

If the frenzy-fomenting brigade counted on all this to knock the GOP down a few pegs, the poll would indicate that they’re failing.

Some of the blame can be placed at the feet of former President Biden and everyone responsible for covering up or ignoring his cognitive decline. People don’t like being lied to. The anti-Trump and GOP messengers also have their hand in dragging the Dems down.

New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders buddied up for their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour which takes aim at wealthy Americans. They can’t stand the rich, but they have no problem traveling like them. The pair took heat for chartering private jets for their cross-country treks.

Were they embarrassed to be caught out? Heck no.

“You think I’m gonna be sitting on a waiting line at United … while 30,000 people are waiting?” Sanders said on Fox News’ “Special Report.”

“No apologies for that. That’s what campaign travel is about. We’ve done it in the past. We’re gonna do it in future.”

We know they will, as we know Dem leaders will blast capitalism, fossil fuel, and any attempt to get government spending under control. But as the Economist/YouGov poll shows, people aren’t buying what they’re selling.

And yet they keep on pitching.

Democratic Sen. Cory Booker is taking his 25-hour Senate floor speech lambasting Trump and his policies and turning it into a book. “Stand” is set for release Nov. 11, which means we can expect a GOP-slamming book tour.

It will likely be a blue state bestseller. Just as those anti-Trump, anti-capitalism, down-with-oligarchs and BTW free Luigi rallies draw some sizable crowds. Will it translate to a meaningful difference at the voting booth?

It sure doesn’t look that way.
