Boston weather: Memorial Day looking mostly clear as period of warmer weather returns

The Boston area is set to kick off the week with a slightly cool but mostly clear Memorial Day, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“Moving forward here, that storm system that’s responsible for all that cloud cover and cool weather, that’s still going to be with us into (Monday), but we should see less cloud cover, more like a mix of sun and clouds,” said NWS meteorologist Andrew Loconto. “The trend starting Monday, is to kind of move away from that sort of cloudy weather pattern towards nicer conditions.”

Memorial Day is expected to be mostly sunny, with a high of 67 degrees in the Boston area, NWS forecasts. For those looking to get outside, the holiday should remain “cooler than average,” Loconto said, but a far cry from the unseasonably chilly weather from the last week.

Moving into Tuesday and Wednesday, the weather is forecasted to become more “typical of late May,” Loconto said. The days are expected to both remain sunny and dry, NWS states.

The highs Tuesday and Wednesday will likely reach the mid-70s, NWS forecasts show, with lows in the mid-50s.

“Tuesday and Wednesday are really pretty good days overall,” Loconto said. “But moving into Thursday through the weekend, it turns unsettled again, which I know we’re kind of sick of saying that, because it’s been feels like we can’t get a break from having at least some rain threat.”

The best chances for rain, Loconto said, appears to be Thursday and Saturday.

Thursday is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high in the low 70s, NWS forecasts show. The chance for rain increases moving into Thursday night.

“It’s going to be another pattern where it turns unsettled in periods of hit or miss showers and thunderstorms,” Loconto said of the later half of the week heading into the weekend. … “But it shouldn’t be the soaking we had  over the weekend.”

Later in the week, temperatures are expected to remain above normal, Loconto said.

Friday is expected to be partially sunny, with a high in the mid-70s, forecasts show. Through the weekend, temperatures may cool slightly towards the lower 70s, NWS predicts.

“As you close out the month of May, towards the weekend into early the first couple days in June, it does slowly cool off again to normal temperatures,” said Loconto.
