Boston weather: Cool days with ‘potentially heavy’ rain incoming mid-week

The Boston region is expected to kick off the week with a few dryer days before seeing bouts of rainy, chillier weather as the week continues, according to National Weather Service forecasts.

“For the next couple of days, there’ll be mainly dry conditions Monday and Tuesday,” said NWS meteorologist Torry Dooley. “We have a system (Sunday) that’s going to be moving off shore towards the Gulf of Maine and then eventually out to the Canadian Maritimes, and that’s where it’ll kind of stall out for a bit.”

Through Monday and Tuesday, Dooley said, the system is expected to provide “mainly dry conditions,” but some “periodic cloud cover with a slight chance of a rain shower, mainly on Monday afternoon.”

The high temperatures Monday and Tuesday are forecast to remain in the low to mid 60s, NWS shows. These temperatures are slightly “cooler than normal,” Dooley said, with seasonal average highs around 67 to 68 degrees.

“Then as we head towards the middle part of the week we’re expecting a late spring nor’easter,” said Dooley. “That’s going to be arriving late Wednesday into Thursday bringing periods of rain. Could be potentially heavy at times, along with gusty, northeasterly winds.”

The system is expected to bring in some “cooler air,” Dooley said. The high temperatures Wednesday and Thursday are expected to drop significantly to the mid-50s, NWS forecasts show.

“And for our mariners, likely hazardous boating conditions late Wednesday night through the day on Friday,” said Dooley.

On Friday, the chance of precipitation is expected to drop from Thursday, forecasts show, and the high temperature may climb slightly to the upper 50s.

“I know a lot of people have their eyes on this weekend, because we’re going into Memorial Day weekend,” said Dooley. “The system is probably slow to exit, so we may have lingering rain showers and cooler conditions on Saturday, with the potential for some slightly warming temperatures Sunday and into Monday.”

High temperatures are preliminarily forecasted to reach the 60s during the weekend, NWS shows.

Though it is “really too tough to give a definitive answer for next Monday,” Dooley said, “as of right now, we’re still holding on for some slight chance rain Sunday afternoon and Monday afternoon.”
