Division 5 track: Records fall by wayside
The record book was kicked sideways at the MSTCA Division 5 relays on Sunday at Kenney Field.
Six new marks were set on the track on a near picture-perfect day but through all the record-setting, it was the Weston boys and the homestanding North Reading girls who were a cut above the rest of the pack.
The Wildcats set two of the six records on the track and used consistency up and down their roster to outdistance a talented Old Rochester squad by 15 points.
North Reading was even more dominant as its ultra-talented roster excelled both on the track and in the field events en route to an 18-point margin over second place Dennis-Yarmouth.
Weston led pretty much from the get-go as Jacob Kasanov, Nick Barbieri, Amir Poyau and Noah Lago ran 42.89 to set a new record in the 4 x 100 relay. Barbieri and Poyau would be part of another record later in the 4 x 400, setting a state best time of 3:21.72 in a race that saw the top three finishers all best the previous record.
A commanding win in the 4 x 800 and a second place behind Medfield in the distance medley relay gave the Wildcats a nearly unassailable lead. Third places in the triple jump and pole vault helped things as well.
The Weston girls also got into the record-setting act when Anne Moser, Solano Varela, Gabny Friel and Izzy Whalen turned in a 12:45.47 in the distance medley relay. But it was the Hornet ladies who were burning up the track.
A second in the 4 x 1600 opened their account before Giuliana Ligor, Callie MacLellan, Katie Zimmerman and Hayden MacLellan steamrolled the field in 1:02.36 to take the 4 x 100 hurdles.
Those four would be heard from again later in the day.
The girls 1600 medley relay turned in one of the best races of the day as North Reading edged out Old Rochester by .16 at the tape.
In the field, the Hornets had a third in the triple jump before Callie MacLellan, Lindsey Cook and Giuliana Auciello all jumped 4-10 ¼ to win the high jump relay.
The coup de gras came in the pole vault as the Hornets and Weston recorded the same mark of 24-6 but North Reading had fewer misses to take the first place points.
The other meet records on the day came in the boys 110 hurdles where Old Rochester’s Wesner Archelus, Calder Eaton, Malik Washburn and Sebastian Harrington won in 1:00.82.
Triton’s quartet of Tyler Brosch, Mike Coco, Will Hight and Jacob Lyman outdueled Triton and Weston in a blazing 1:30.34 in the 4 x 200.
