The man accused of gunning down a cabbie in the Back Bay — a “ruthless killing” in broad daylight that shook local taxi drivers — is heading to trial.

Rhode Island man Phillip Foy, 40, allegedly shot 60-year-old Dorchester man, Luckinson Oruma, multiple times outside the Colonnade Hotel on Huntington Avenue in the middle of the day on June 4, 2019 because the cabbie refused to drive him down to Mansfield.

“You’re going to move this cab or I’ll move you,” Foy allegedly told Oruma near the Prudential Center before pulling him out of the car, standing over him and shooting him in the back and neck before fleeing, according to prosecutors.

Oruma, a father of five from Dorchester, was transported to Tufts Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. He sustained nine bullet wounds.

After the shooting, Foy allegedly drove down Huntington Avenue, turned onto Ring Road and parked. He allegedly emptied and discarded the firearm and magazine, removed his shoes, and sat in front of a nearby Starbucks.

“When police arrived Foy grabbed a pedestrian and attempted to shield himself,” the Suffolk DA’s Office said in a statement. “Police diffused the situation and arrested Foy. Foy confessed to shooting Oruma but claimed it was in self-defense.”

Jury selection in Foy’s trial has now started.

Shocked and saddened local cabbies spoke to the Herald in the wake of the killing six years ago.

“I can’t remember us having anything quite like this,” said Joe Litvack, treasurer of the Independent Taxi Operators Association. “It seems to have no reason.

“Yeah we’ve had robberies before, but never a ruthless killing like this,” he added. “It’s something we’ll never be able to make sense of.”
