Celtics add Jaylen Brown to injury report ahead of Game 3 vs. Magic
ORLANDO — After delivering one of the best playoff performances of his career in the Celtics’ Game 2 win over the Magic, Jaylen Brown now is questionable for Game 3.
Boston added the 2024 NBA Finals MVP to its crowded injury report seven hours before Friday’s road matchup with Orlando at the Kia Center. Brown was listed with a right knee posterior impingement, the same designation he carried for the final several weeks of the regular season.
Brown missed the Celtics’ final three regular-season games and eight of their last 16, but he was full-go in their first two playoff games. On Wednesday, he racked up 36 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to power Boston to a 2-0 series lead while injured co-star Jayson Tatum watched from the bench.
Tatum, who suffered what head coach Joe Mazzulla called a “severe bone bruise” in his shooting wrist in Game 1, is listed as doubtful for Game 3. Brown and guard Jrue Holiday (right hamstring strain) both are questionable, meaning Boston could be down as many as three starters in a must-win game for the underdog Magic.
“We’ve had to deal with this kind of all season, and because of that, some of our other guys have gotten opportunities,” veteran big man Al Horford, who replaced Tatum in the starting lineup in Game 2, said at Friday’s morning shootaround. “And it’s no different. Our guys stay ready. We’re preparing for it. Whether it’s Sam Hauser coming off the bench and having an impact, Luke (Kornet), Baylor (Scheierman), whoever it is, we just have to stay ready at any moment. That’s what we did all season, and we’ll see what happens tonight. If that’s what needs to be done, then I know our guys will be ready. And if not, we’ll get rolling like we normally do.”

Horford also named Brown as one of the players who would need to step up Friday night with Tatum likely to miss his second straight game. Brown was added to the injury report an hour later.
“I think for us, (the key is) to continue to rally and understand that we have to do it as a group,” Horford said. “JB’s going to have to step up a little bit more, (Kristaps Porzingis) is going to have to step up more, Derrick (White), and it just goes down the line like that. We all just have to be ready for that.”
Brown played 42 minutes in Wednesday’s 109-100 win at TD Garden, remaining on the floor from midway through the second quarter until the final minute of the game, when Mazzulla lifted him with the Celtics’ victory secured. He had not played more than 31 minutes in any game since March 12 as Boston took steps to manage his lingering knee issue.
