Undefeated Walpole, Caitlyn Naughton roll past Foxboro

FOXBORO — There is always a rising team looking for an upset.

But Caitlyn Naughton and her teammates refused to let an up-and-coming local rival succeed Wednesday.

The UMass commit continued her torrid scoring streak with a five-goal outburst, while fellow senior captains Jenna Wong and Sophia Fruci each registered a hat trick as Walpole (8-0) remained undefeated with an outstanding 14-3 victory over Foxboro.

“We were going into this game with an open mind,” said Naughton. “We knew how tough Foxboro is, and how much they’ve been playing with good teams. I think we went in with the same mentality we go to every game, teamwork, and that every fifty-fifty ground ball should be ours. We go into every game competitive, and that is because we practice so hard.”

The Timberwolves walked into their opponent’s den looking to make a statement. Their leaders propelled things offensively in the early going, as Wong buried back-to-back goals in the game’s opening 2:18, helping Walpole seize a 2-0 advantage. Fruci followed with a pair of goals, making it a 4-0 contest with 4:27 left in the opening frame.

With 1:36 to play in the first quarter, Naughton received her first scoring opportunity off of a free position shot. She did not miss, sniping the cage as Walpole constructed a 5-0 edge.

“The biggest strength of our team is speed and athleticism,” Walpole coach Mike Tosone said. “So we tend to score in bunches. We were able to score pretty early. It doesn’t always work out that way, but we want to think in just about every game like a basketball team that full-court presses and all that stuff. That, at some point, any point in the game, we might be just a little bit of a way from going on a goal-scoring binge, if you will. Today was one of those games.”

After Ava MacLean notched a goal with 4:38 left in the half to extend the lead, Naughton ripped a shot home for her second 19 ticks later to help the Timberwolves establish a 7-0 lead.

With 2:44 left in the second quarter, Naughton completed a hat trick as Walpole broke things open at 8-0.

Naughton opened the third quarter by recording her fourth and fifth goals, respectively, starting a running clock for Walpole.

Foxboro (6-2) netted three unanswered goals as the second half progressed, as Jackie Connors, Lily Kelley and Chloe McGarry found the cage for the Warriors. However, Wong put the finishing touches on things with 1:00 left in regulation, firing her third goal home for the Timberwolves.

“I think every game, we try to make a statement,” Naughton said. “Because we want to get back to the final. I think we have to take it game by game, I think we needed to beat a really good team to show that we could be up there again.”
