Mone has successful Music Hall return
For Mercedes Moné, Wednesday night marked quite the homecoming.
A star of the ring and screen (her most impressive role is as Koska Reeves in The Mandalorian), Moné is a proud native of Cambridge. That made Wednesday night’s feat even more significant, as she headlined All Elite Wrestling’s Dynamite event at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway, defeating Athena in the semi-finals of the Owen Hart Cup tournament.
“I hadn’t wrestled in Boston for years, so to do it right next to Fenway and see and hear and feel this crowd, it was amazing,” said Moné, whose name is Mercedes Varnardo. “Once I was in the ring, I felt the crowd and lived in that moment.”
The 21-minute bout was a breathtaking display of the craft. Moné’s victory ended Athena’s 64-match winning streak, rolling her up for the victory after reversing Athena’s finishing move.
“Before we even locked up, I was so overwhelmed,” said Moné. “I couldn’t even be Mercedes Moné the character – I was Mercedes Vernado taking it all in. As the crowd was cheering, I asked myself, ‘Is this really happening?’
“It was everything I wanted and more, especially to do it against Athena. Even in defeat, Athena deserves her praise. She’s too talented to be denied.”
Already covered in gold, Moné is currently the AEW TBS Champion. Her victory against Athena puts her on a trajectory to face AEW Women’s Champion “Timeless” Toni Storm at All In, which takes place this July at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
“I’ve never had the chance to wrestle Toni Storm in a singles match,” said Moné, who had a brief stare down with Storm after the match. “You have no idea how badly I want that.”
This marked the first pro wrestling show at MGM Fenway, and featured the spectacular – which was on display when athletic marvel Will Ospreay defeated rising star Konosuke Takeshita. The event was a celebration of professional wrestling, highlighting AEW’s 289th episode of Dynamite, one more than famed WCW show Nitro, and even Celtics power forward Kristaps Porzingis was ringside taking in the action.
AEW is back at the MGM Fenway Thursday, with a special live broadcast of Collision. The card will feature Moné teaming with Harley Cameron in a tag match against Kris Statlander and Julia Hart.
Moné is ready to once again seize the spotlight, making the most of her return to Boston.
“I’m here to show the world that this is where the best wrestle,” said Moné. “I’m here to uplift the whole AEW women’s division, to make it mean something more.
“I’m opening the door for a whole audience to see me, and I’m doing something I love every single time, every single week.”
