Gophers quarterback Zach Pyron enters NCAA transfer portal
Quarterback Zach Pryon’s stint with the Gophers football program didn’t last through spring practices.
Pyron, who transferred in from Georgia Tech in January, is back in the NCAA transfer portal, a source confirmed to the Pioneer Press on Thursday.
Pyron didn’t receive many team reps during the final two practices open to reporters, including Tuesday, when Max Shikenjanski and Dylan Wittke received most of the snaps behind presumed starter Drake Lindsey. True freshman Jackson Pollock is below them, just getting his first taste of college football.
Gophers coach P.J. Fleck downplayed the lack of plays Pyron received during team periods of practices on Tuesday.
“We are rotating a lot of the quarterbacks,” Fleck said. “Don’t read into who’s getting reps when because you will be in a circle. That doesn’t necessarily matter. It’s based on how many reps they got during practices, where we wanted to put them. I want to put people in different situations with different players.”
Pyron was the most-experienced option at QB for the Gophers, having played 19 games for the Yellowjackets over three seasons. He completed 88 of 155 passes for 995 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions.
The spring transfer portal window is open until April 25; it’s unclear if Pyron’s exit will result in the Gophers going back into the portal for another option at QB or if they will stand pat.
