Setting sail for spring: Boston’s iconic Swan Boats assembled for the season ahead
In one of the surest signs of spring yet, crews at the Public Garden got to work Monday assembling the beloved Swan Boats for a season of leisurely cruising the park’s lagoon.
The Swan Boats officially open on Saturday, when Mayor Michelle Wu and her family are due for a float through the lagoon at 11 a.m., along with a group of students from Boston’s schools.
The iconic boats date back to 1877 when Roger Paget introduced them alongside the rowboat rental business he was running in the Public Garden.
Nearly 150 years later, the Paget family is still maintaining the business, and the boats. The oldest has been in service for 115 years. Following Monday’s assembly, the boats are open again for the public to enjoy on Saturday.
