Celtics playoff schedule: Date announced for first-round opener
The Celtics will open their bid for Banner 19 this Sunday at TD Garden.
The NBA on Monday announced the dates for Game 1 of its eight first-round playoff series. The four involving the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in each conference will be held Sunday; the other four are set for Saturday.
The start time and television details for Boston’s postseason opener are to be determined, as is its opponent. As the second seed in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics will host the winner of the 7-vs.-8 play-in game between the Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks. That game will be played Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT.
The Magic-Hawks loser will play the winner of Chicago Bulls-Miami Heat for the right to face the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in the opening round.
The Celtics defeated the Charlotte Hornets 93-86 on Sunday to close out a 61-21 regular season — the best by a defending champion since the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors won 73 games.
Boston — which went 16-3 last postseason to hoist the franchise’s first Larry O’Brien Trophy since 2008 — is attempting to become the first NBA team since 2018 to win back-to-back titles. The last five champions all failed to even reach the conference finals the following season.
“Great season again,” Celtics guard Payton Pritchard said after Sunday’s win. “Obviously, it’s very special to win 60 games in a year, so we’re definitely proud of that. We had some slumps in the middle of the year, but we finished really strong going into the playoffs. And then now, with the playoffs, it’s a seven-game series. No matter how long it takes, we’ve got to get it done. And we’re battle-tested, but hopefully we can take steps and keep getting better and better and get another championship.”
The Magic (41-41) and Hawks (40-42) both posted 2-1 records against the Celtics during the regular season, though one of Orlando’s victories came against Boston’s backups in the final week. Atlanta was the only opponent to win two games at TD Garden.
