SUDBURY – In a matchup of two of the top teams in their respective divisions, it was the Div.1 power that held ground.

Defending Div. 2 state title champion Walpole could only muster four hits and one earned run as Lincoln-Sudbury scored more than enough to upend Walpole 5-2 at home Friday.

“We were really excited to add Walpole to our schedule this year,” said Warriors coach Devan Morrison. “We really wanted to challenge ourselves this year. (Our players) came into this game with the perfect amount of hype and they just stayed locked in focus for seven innings.”

After retiring the side in the first, Lincoln-Sudbury (3-1) came to the plate and struck first early as senior captain Ashleigh Lent scored on an RBI double for Nicole Lent to make it 1-0. They would add on as senior Sarah Danielson drove in Nicole from third on a grounder to short. Danielson would later score on a passed ball to make it 3-0 in the first.

“It adds support for Kelsey in the circle and it just gives everybody confidence for the rest of the game,” Morrison said about the early run support. “We punch first. We get that run support and everybody’s loose and comfortable.”

Senior captain Kelsey Blanchette answered by striking out the side in the top of the second as she ended up with 10 K’s on the day.

“Being able to pitch and have run support is very helpful,” Blanchette said. “You can come out and fire and keep going and keep pushing runs across. … It keeps our drive to win.”

Lincoln-Sudbury tacked on two more in the third as Danielson crushed a two-run homer with Blanchette aboard to push the lead out to 5-0 after three.

“Sarah is a kid who works really hard at her offensive side of the game,” said Morrison. “Nobody deserves to put one out of the park more than her in that type of situation.”

Blanchette got in a jam in the top of the fifth as Caroline Daley and Sharlotte Stazinski put runners on second and third with nobody out for Walpole (2-1). The lone run came on a one-out sacrifice fly to right for junior Caitlin Baker to score Daley from third.

“The strikeouts are really great, but, honestly, (it is) the trust in the defense behind her,” Morrison said. “We work really hard in practice and just to be able to throw knowing that you’ve got seven girls behind you that can go and make a play on any ball that’s in play.”

Walpole got an unearned run in the seventh as Blanchette struck out Baker to end the contest.
