MassArt student caught harassing Trump supporter in Boston: ‘Sad’ a hat triggered hate
MassArt has confirmed that one of its students is seen in a video verbally harassing a Trump supporter wearing a white and gold “47” hat while walking on a Boston sidewalk, behavior that officials say doesn’t reflect the school’s values.
“While we cannot share further details about individual student matters, we want to affirm that the behavior displayed in the video does not reflect the values of MassArt,” the school said in a statement shared with the Herald Friday afternoon. “The College is committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members of our community.
“We take this matter seriously, and any behavior that violates MassArt’s Community Standards is addressed through our established conduct process,” the school added.
Nicky Miceli, a 21-year-old student at Curry College, says no one should have to endure the verbal harassment he encountered while wearing the Trump hat, an incident he believes reinforces how political violence is “getting much worse.”
The Natick native spoke to the Herald on Friday, rehashing how a casual walk down Huntington Avenue, past several Boston universities, on Thursday turned out to be anything but.
“I really think that people being able to express themselves is one of the things that makes America so great,” Miceli said. “It’s really sad that you have to think twice about wearing a hat when you go out in public.
“I like the direction this country is heading overall with the policies of President Trump,” he added. “What I don’t like is what it’s bringing out in people, how it’s kind of bringing out the worst in people. Eventually, we have to come together.”
Miceli said he came to the city to meet a friend in the area when he got approached for wearing his white and gold hat with “47” on the front and “We won” on the back. He said the man who caught a glimpse of the hat was about his age, maybe a year or two older.
“He instantly came up and said, ‘Yo, is that a 47 hat?’ I said ‘Yes,’ and that’s when he started screaming,” Miceli said of the first moments of the encounter. “About 15, 20 seconds into his rant, I pulled out the camera and started filming so he wouldn’t try anything stupid, but he did it anyway.”
Miceli filmed 2 minutes and 3 seconds of the exchange which featured him taking verbal blows from the MassArt student who yelled some iteration of the “F” word roughly 45 times and called Miceli a “Nazi” roughly a dozen times.
Miceli did not swear once.
“Nazi (expletive) punk,” the student yelled at Miceli at the very beginning of the video. “Go (expletive) yourself. You’re on my (expletive) campus with that (expletive) hat on. Get the (expletive) out of here, get the (expletive) out of here.”
Miceli responded, twice saying, “This is actually a public street,” but the man said he didn’t “care, you (expletive) Nazi” and “I’m going to walk you all the way to this (expletive) corner, you punk.”
The student, who refused to identify himself to Micheli, told bystanders to “boo” Miceli who the student said isn’t wanted “on our (expletive) campus or in our (expetive) city.”
At the end of the exchange, Miceli said: “This is great content. This is awesome.”
The student stopped following Miceli when they got to an intersection, with the student yelling across the street: “Go (expletive) yourself, you expletive.”
The incident occurred at about 1:40 p.m., and Miceli posted the video of the exchange about a half hour later on his social media accounts.
By 1 p.m. Friday, his initial post garnered over 5,400 comments, 12,000 reshares, 31,000 likes and 5.2 million views. The viral nature only multiplied as prominent conservative accounts either commented on the post or reshared the video of the encounter.
“I was surprised about that,” Miceli told the Herald. “People are saying ‘Oh, you should have knocked him out,’ ‘Oh, you should have called the police.’ I thought a little social media shaming never hurt anybody, so I thought that was appropriate.”
Speculation ran rampant as people tried to track down the identity of the individual seen yelling at Miceli. MassArt confirmed the individual to be a student in a statement to the Herald at about 4 p.m. Friday.
Wentworth Institute of Technology, a nearby university, confirmed in a social media post earlier Friday that neither of the people involved in the video had a connection to the school.
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 103, also confirmed to the Herald that the individual seen yelling belonged to the union.
“IBEW Local 103 does not condone any of the behavior displayed in the video,” a union spokesperson told the Herald. “Assumptions appear to have been made based on the IBEW-branded hat and the video’s Boston location. However, the hat does not reference IBEW 103 specifically, nor has it ever been distributed or sold by our Local.”
MassArt told the Herald it will “continue to monitor the situation accordingly.” It did not say how the student may be disciplined.
“Again, we want to re-affirm that the behavior displayed in the video does not reflect the values of MassArt,” the school said in a statement. “We are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members of our community and we do not condone or support harassment, intimidation, or discrimination in any form.”
Miceli, a junior at Curry College studying communications, is a member of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee and vice chairman of the Natick Republican Town Committee. After graduating, he said he plans to continue “promoting the Republican Party in hopes of bringing a two-party system back to Massachusetts.”
The Massachusetts GOP posted on X: “This behavior is absolutely unacceptable. We hope the (MassDems) join us in condemning their radical supporter for intimidating someone just for wearing a hat.”
The Massachusetts Democratic Party did not respond to a Herald request for comment on Friday.
Miceli’s video caught the eye of Riley Gaines, an activist for women’s rights in sports, and conservative activist Scott Presler.
“Wow,” Presler wrote in an X post on Thursday. “Make this guy infamous. The party of ‘tolerance’ strikes again.”
