Why Payton Pritchard signed with Converse after wearing Jaylen Brown’s 741s
NEW YORK — Payton Pritchard is an NBA champion, the front-runner for Sixth Man of the Year and, as of last week, the owner of a new shoe deal.
The Celtics guard recently signed with Converse, joining Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Kelly Oubre Jr. in the Boston-based sneaker company’s small portfolio of NBA endorsers.
Pritchard has spent much of this season wearing Jaylen Brown’s self-produced 741 Performance Rover sneakers, but he said Brown wasn’t miffed when he signed with a different manufacturer.
“I mean, once you tell him the money situation and stuff like that, then he’s going to have to understand it a little more,” Pritchard said before Tuesday’s matchup with the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. “I’m not in a position like JB is. We’re not making as much money as that man, so it’s a little bit different. He wasn’t heartbroken. I’m still going to be always supportive of his brand, and I hope that takes off.”
Pritchard, who’s enjoyed a breakout season in Year 1 of a four-year, $30 million contract, said he was courted by several sneaker brands before making his decision.
“There was a lot of companies. A lot of people put their offers out. Ultimately, Converse’s offer and everything with it was what I thought was the best decision for myself,” Pritchard said. “I’ve said this before: JB’s shoe is an unbelievable basketball shoe. Everything just with Converse I feel like appealed to me, and the lifestyle stuff and stuff like that that I really liked.”
The fact that Converse’s headquarters is a stone’s throw away from TD Garden didn’t hurt its pitch.
“I love it,” said Pritchard, who leads the NBA in points off the bench this season and ranks sixth among all players in made 3-pointers. “I love it. It’s unbelievable to be a part of their brand. It’s Boston-based, and me representing the Celtics and Boston with it is an unbelievable opportunity to showcase it.”
Pritchard and second-year pro Jordan Walsh are the only Celtics players other than Brown to wear 741 — the performance brand the 2024 NBA Finals MVP launched last offseason as an alternative to the typical footwear giants — in games this season.
