The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling vehicle in Norway in March.

The Norwegian new car market rallies back up 36.5% year-on-year in March to 13,304 units, keeping in mind March 2024 was down -49.7% on the year prior. The Q1 volume is up 42% to 31,596. 11,192 BEVs were registered this month, up 28.5% to 84.1% share, lower than average and than the 89.3% of March 2024. This small fall is due to the surge of PHEV sales up 476.2% to 1,210 and 9.1% share vs. 2.2% a year ago, triggered by the rise of taxes for this type of vehicles on April 1st, resulting in a rush of registrations. Meanwhile HEVs are up a modest 1.1% for the month to 563 but down -18.6% year-to-date to 841. Petrol sales account for 0.8% of the market and diesel 1.8%. Year-to-date BEV sales are up 42.6% to 28,623 and 90.6% share vs. 90.2% over Q1 2024.

In the brands ranking, Tesla posts its first win of the year with a dominant 16.6% share, containing its year-on-year loss to just -1%. However in a market up 36.5% this still represents a stark underperformance. Volkswagen (+62.1%) soars and holds onto the YTD top spot while Volvo (+112.2%) does even better at #3 with 9.7% of the market vs. 7.6% so far this year. Toyota (-2.8%) is in trouble, but Mercedes (+89.3%), BMW (+88.6%) and Nissan (+64%) all outrun the overall market growth.

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (-8.6%) delivers a very dominant result at 13.7% share or more than 3 times any other model but falls year-on-year as the new model is still gearing up. This performance pushes the Model Y to #1 over Q1. Leader for the first time last month, the Nissan Ariya (+247%) falls to #2, followed by the VW ID.7 (+711.8%) also in tremendous shape. The VW ID.4 (+12.9%) and Volvo EX30 (+10.4%) are weak while the Toyota bZ4X (-34.4%) is in freefall and loses its YTD top spot. The Tesla Model 3 (+75.5%) and Toyota Yaris Cross (+117.2%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10. Pulled forward PHEV sales spectacularly lift the Volvo XC90 (+3200%) and XC60 (+1963.6%) while the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV reappears at #13.
