Red Sox calling up RHP Hunter Dobbins as 27th man for doubleheader

The Red Sox are calling up one of their top pitching prospects for Sunday’s doubleheader.

According to multiple sources, right-hander Hunter Dobbins is being promoted from Triple-A as the 27th man for the doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Chris Henrique of Boston Sports Journal was first to report Dobbins’ promotion.

Originally an eighth-round pick out of Texas Tech in the 2021 MLB Draft, Dobbins dealt with injuries early in his career but has since emerged as one of Boston’s most consistent and productive starting pitching prospects. Last year the 25-year-old was honored as Boston’s Minor League Starting Pitcher of the Year after posting a 3.08 ERA in 125.2 innings split between Double-A and Triple-A, and following the season he was added to the 40-man roster ahead of the Rule 5 Draft.

Dobbins spent a portion of spring training in big league camp before being optioned to Triple-A Worcester to start the season. He currently ranks as Boston’s No. 11 prospect according to Baseball America.

As of Sunday morning the Red Sox plan to start left-hander Sean Newcomb for the early game but have not announced a starter for the evening game. Richard Fitts was originally scheduled to start Saturday and is presumably still available to start Game 2, but if the Red Sox would prefer to keep him and Newcomb on different schedules then Dobbins would likely be a candidate to make his first career MLB start.
