Massachusetts man arrested after threatening to murder ‘prominent’ federal official, family
A Cape Cod man who allegedly threatened to murder a federal official and members of their family is in custody after authorities arrested him on a criminal complaint.
Authorities charged Michael P. Mahoney, 62, of South Dennis, with one count of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person, days after he allegedly called the official’s relative and threatened to kill the family member and their spouse as well as the federal official.
Massachusetts US Attorney Leah Foley’s office did not disclose the identities of those whom Mahoney allegedly threatened to murder, but it added in a release that the official is “prominent.”
The official’s relative is said to have been having dinner with two other individuals at a location outside of Massachusetts at about 10:15 last Friday night when they received a phone call with “No Caller ID.”
“Upon answering the phone, the caller, later alleged to be Mahoney, confirmed the relative’s full name,” Foley’s office said in a release. “Mahoney then allegedly started to scream and stated that he was going to murder the relative, their spouse and the federal official – allegedly referring to the spouse and federal official by their first names – and said, ‘Die you f*****g c**t mother f****r.’”
The relative ended the roughly 12-second call and declined to answer Mahoney’s attempt to call back.
On Saturday, law enforcement approached Mahoney’s residence after identifying the phone number that made the “threatening call” as Mahoney’s. The man allegedly refused to respond to police at his door or on the phone.
A federal judge remanded Mahoney to the custody of the U.S. Marshal Service after an arraignment in Boston federal court Wednesday afternoon. Mahoney’s detention hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday.
Mahoney could face a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a fine of up to $250,000 on the charge of transmitting interstate threats to injure another person.
