Texas Sen. Ted Cruz slams Massachusetts courts for releasing criminal illegal aliens
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is slamming Massachusetts courts for releasing illegal criminal aliens instead of turning the offenders over to ICE, an action that he says illustrates “where today’s Democrats are.”
In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night, the Texas Republican brought up Massachusetts “state courts” as he talked about how he has not seen a Democrat mention the names of victims who have died at the hands of illegal criminals: Rachel Morin, Jocelyn Nungaray and Lakyn Riley.
“You look up in Massachusetts right now, and Massachusetts, the state courts are releasing criminals who have committed violent child rape,” Cruz said. “They are releasing them rather than turning over to ICE to be deported.”
“Who in their right mind says, ‘You know what our community needs? Is more child rapists,’” the senator added. “Well, that’s where today’s Democrats are.”
Under a state Supreme Judicial Court ruling in 2017, law enforcement and courts in Massachusetts cannot arrest or hold a person based on a civil immigration detainer.
Detainers request the holding of a “noncitizen for a period not to exceed 48 hours beyond the time the individual would otherwise be released.”
Gov. Maura Healey has repeatedly declared Massachusetts is “not a sanctuary state,” and that state agencies, including Massachusetts State Police, cooperate with federal immigration authorities where they can.
The governor reaffirmed her stance last week when asked whether President Donald Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, succeeded in his pledge to bring “hell” to Boston when he visited the city earlier this month.
“As a former attorney general, I can assure you that I’m doing everything I can to support the work of those in law enforcement to address issues of crime in communities,” Healey said. “I’ll also remind people that Massachusetts is among the safest states in the country.”
Federal authorities reportedly arrested 370 illegal aliens from March 18 to 23 during an “enhanced operation” that focused on transnational organized crime and gangs, including the notorious MS-13, Tren de Aragua, Trinitarios, and 18th Street, ICE Boston reported.
