Parcells was nominated five times by the Hall’s selection committee before Kraft made an exception and personally extended an invitation over the phone last week.
“I thought it would be great, given what he’s done for the team, if he would accept entry as a contributor into the Patriots Hall of Fame. He accepted,” Kraft said at the NFL Annual Meeting. “I actually wanted to meet with him in person, but he was on his way to Saratoga, where he goes. So I’m excited.”
Parcells legitimized the franchise upon his arrival as a Super Bowl-winning coach in 1993 and took the Patriots to the playoffs in two of his four seasons. The Patriots enjoyed a three-win jump in his first season, then made the playoffs the following year when Parcells was named NFL Coach of the Year. After a down season in 1995, Parcells led the Patriots to their second Super Bowl appearance in franchise history, thanks to a 20-6 AFC Championship win over the Jaguars.
His controversial exit to coach the Jets in 1997 stoked a division rivalry for years to come. Parcells later coached the Cowboys for four seasons and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2013. He is the only coach in NFL history to take four different teams to the playoffs and three franchises to a conference championship game. Parcells has two Super Bowl rings, winning titles with the Giants in 1986 and 1990.
The Patriots have yet to announce a time and date for Parcells’ induction ceremony..
“As a five-time finalist for our hall of fame, I am sure he would have been voted in eventually, but I wanted to expedite the process so he can enjoy the ceremony,” Kraft said in a statement posted to the team’s website. “I look forward to welcoming Bill back to Foxborough and celebrating his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame.”
