Indicted Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson allowed attorney payment plan
Indicted Boston City Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson is allowed to pay her court-appointed attorney on a $1,000 per month payment plan.
The councilor, who is accused of orchestrating a kickback scheme in which a new staffer paid her back more than half of the sign-on bonus in a City Hall bathroom handover, announced Thursday that she couldn’t afford the $5,000 fee to help cover the cost of her federal public defender.
“Ms. Fernandes Anderson will comply with the Court’s directive but is unable to pay the full balance at this time,” attorney Scott Lauer’s filing continued, noting that her bank statements will be filed under seal for the court to review.
Fernandes Anderson proposed to pay $1,000 immediately and then get on a $1,000 monthly payment plan until the balance is paid.
On Friday, U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge Donald L. Cabell granted her request.
Fernandes Anderson is accused of hiring a relative to her staff and giving this staff member a generous bonus of $13,000 — but under the secret condition that $7,000 tax-free of that bonus be kicked back to her. Court complaints allege that she may have been motivated in part by financial difficulties.
Fernandes Anderson, 46, was released under standard conditions following her December arraignment on six public corruption charges. She’s next due in court on March 5.
