Patriots add defensive backs coach from Bills after recent staff departures

The Patriots added a defensive backs coach to Mike Vrabel’s staff Wednesday, following the departures of cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino and safeties coach Brian Belichick on Tuesday.

Vrabel hired Scott Booker, according to a source. Booker was most recently the Bills’ nickel coach/senior defensive assistant. Previously, he served under Vrabel on the Titans from 2018 to 2023, first as a defensive assistant before being promoted to safeties coach from 2020 to 2023.

Booker will most likely coach safeties with the Patriots, as well. He began his coaching career at Kent State, his alma mater, in 2003 before rising up the ranks and spending time at Western Kentucky, Notre Dame and Nebraska.

He has experience coaching in all three phases, working at Notre Dame as an offensive intern and as a tight ends coach/special teams coordinator. Booker also coached safeties and special teams at Nebraska in 2017 before making the move to the NFL.

Booker will work under defensive coordinator Terrell Williams. The Patriots have also hired Zak Kuhr and Clint McMillan, both of whom worked under Vrabel, and former college coaches Kevin Richardson and Milton Patterson on the defensive side of the ball.

The Patriots brought back Josh McDaniels as offensive coordinator and have hired Ashton Grant, Thomas Brown, Tony Dews, Doug Marrone and Jason Houghtaling on the offensive side of the ball.
