BC High, James Jones (30 points, 11 rebounds) nip Catholic Memorial
Throughout BC High’s turbulent season, James Jones remains the constant.
James scored a game-high 30 points while grabbing 11 rebounds to lead BC High to lead a crucial 74-69 boys basketball win over Catholic Conference rival and No. 14 Catholic Memorial on Tuesday night at McNeice Pavilion. The game was a rematch of Jan. 10 when the Knights prevailed by five points.
“I honestly don’t think much was different from the first game other than we went on the late run and in the first game they did,” BC High coach Bill Loughnane said. “Our guys played confident down the stretch.”
Jones’ play came off a Sunday performance against Bridgewater-Raynham in which he went 8-of-11 from the field.
The Knights led 69-67 with 3:10 to play, but Eagles guard Larry Keough finished in transition to tie the score. Moments later, the Eagles grabbed the lead with Julian Sustache hitting a cutting Jones for a three-point play to push BC High in front 72-69 with a minute to go. The Eagles got two key defensive stops and dribbled the shot clock down, resulting in Jones getting fouled with five seconds left. The senior hit both at the line to seal.
BC High (6-7) lost a pair of tight games to St. John’s Shrewsbury and Bridgewater-Raynham coming into the evening, but Loughnane noted the competitiveness of those contests.
“I did not feel like we played poorly in either of those games,” Loughnane said. “Those two teams both played terrific, we just lost them down the stretch. I think for the most part we have played pretty well.”
Jones hit a triple and a pair of layups while Sustache drained a three of his own to help give BC High a 21-13 lead after one.
Courtesy of 14 points from sophomore Aiden Pires, Catholic Memorial held a 42-41 lead at the half. The two sides traded runs throughout the third quarter but the Knights had the final say. John Hoenscheid hit a triple and Pires finished through traffic to give the visitors a 63-61 advantage heading into the final stanza.
