Source: Patriots longtime cornerback coach won’t return in 2025

The Patriots will be overhauling their defensive back coaching staff under new head coach Mike Vrabel in 2025.

Cornerbacks coach Mike Pellegrino, who has held his post since 2019, will not return to the team next season, a source told the Herald’s Andrew Callahan.

Pellegrino coached three All-Pro cornerbacks during his time with the Patriots: Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson and Christian Gonzalez. He also managed some big personalities as a young coach in the Patriots’ cornerbacks room.

The 31-year-old joined the Patriots in 2015 as a coaching assistant and held that role through the 2018 season, earning two Super Bowl rings. He was assigned to coach cornerbacks in 2019.

During Pellegrino’s time coaching cornerbacks, the Patriots ranked third in EPA allowed per dropback and seventh in dropback success rate.

Pellegrino played lacrosse at Johns Hopkins before joining the Patriots’ staff. He briefly played Major League Lacrosse while coaching with the Patriots.

It’s unclear who will take over Pellegrino’s role as cornerbacks coach in 2025. Safeties coach Brian Belichick also won’t return next season.
