Red Sox’s ‘Big Three’ among nine invited to spring training
The Red Sox’s top three prospects will officially have an opportunity to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster, the club confirmed Tuesday.
Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer were among the latest batch of minor leaguers extended an invite to Red Sox spring training. The “Big Three” will be joined by six others, including newly signed utility player Abraham Toro, catchers Nathan Hickey and Mark Kolozsvary, and pitchers Jovani Moran, Brian Van Belle and Jacob Webb.
The Red Sox currently have 20 non-roster invitees total set to attend big league camp in Fort Myers.
Anthony, Campbell and Mayer are all consensus Top 15 prospects in MLB, with Anthony regarded by most as the No. 1 prospect outside of Japanese superstar Roki Sasaki, who is expected to immediately slot into the top of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation. Campbell has also made huge strides over the past year, sweeping most significant Minor League Baseball awards after starting 2024 in relative obscurity, and Mayer remains one of the most highly regarded young shortstops in baseball.
Anthony and Campbell in particular are expected to contend for spots on the Opening Day roster, while Mayer will most likely start the year in Triple-A after injuries prevented him from playing at that level following his mid-summer promotion from Double-A.
Toro, who signed with the Red Sox on a minor league deal earlier Tuesday, is a six-year MLB veteran who spent 2024 with the Athletics. A 28-year-old switch hitter, Toro primarily plays infield but has a couple of games at outfield under his belt as well.
The Red Sox also recently signed Kolozsvary to a minor league deal, bringing the veteran catcher back to bolster the club’s minor league depth. Kolozsvary also spent last year with the Red Sox in camp and played 27 games for the club in Worcester.
