MSTCA Track: Relay team qualifies for nationals

BOSTON – Some of the MIAA’s top track and field athletes were on full display Sunday afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Center for the MSTCA Large Schools Invitational.

Representatives from 55 total Division 1 and Division 2 schools competed. Winchester, Methuen and Brookline were some of the top performing teams overall while Brockton’s Lucas Andrade, the Weymouth 4x400m relay team and Peabody’s Evan Bedard set meet records.

Bedard’s record came in the high jump and it was the last field event of the day. He finished with a distance of 46-03.00, the 30th best finish thus far in 2025 nationally and the second best in Massachusetts.

He credited a solid training plan from his coaches for his success.

“We practiced triple jump a lot throughout the week,” Bedard said. “It was about working hard, staying consistent and trusting what my coach makes up for me.”

He also won the long jump earlier in the day with a distance of 22-11.00. This was the best finish in the state in the event in 2025 and he said it kept him loose for his high jump attempt down the line.

“I was a little warmed up from the long jump,” Bedard said. “It wasn’t that much of a big deal but it was still waiting for a while, which is just how the Reggie is.”

The senior said he will not be content with just the meet record.

“Not staying complacent,” Bedard said of his mentality moving forward. “Always trying to get better and always trying to do more. I want to bring it into the spring season, carry on the good performances and do whatever I need to do.”

Another standout performance came from Attleboro’s 4×400 m relay team. The Blue Bombardiers squad of Jaylen Stevens-Outland, Jonathan Tracey, Edgar Esquivel and Aaron Martin finished with a time of 3:26.64 and bested a competitive bid from Brookline to take the victory.

“We had a lot of communication going into it,” Stevens-Outland said. “We were telling each other how to be the best and pushed and encouraged each other. Edgar really stepped up and put his heart out there”

The win avenged a sixth-place finish from the 2024 event and the group was happy with the significant jump up the leaderboard.

“It was a day of hard work and improvement,” Martin said “You have got to love those days.”

It also secured a bid into nationals for the group, which will take place in March. Tracey said this was the goal entering the event and accomplishing it was huge.

“We wanted to get to nationals,” Jonathan Tracey said. “The past few seasons it has run away from us. We got it done today,”
