Second annual Curling Day in Minnesota offers up free demonstrations, open houses, and mini lessons
In honor of Curling Day in Minnesota on Sunday, many clubs, including the one in St. Paul are offering opportunities for people to visit and learn curling with mini lessons and demonstrations this weekend.
In St. Paul, the Frogtown Curling Club is holding an open house from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday where instructors will give mini-lessons, teaching people how to “stone, sweep, and score” and play a mini game.
The one-hour lesson, for those 12 and up, is $20 for people with a Winter Carnival button and $24 for those without one. Participants are asked to bring a pair of clean sneakers and dress in “warm, flexible clothing.”
The lessons will be on a first come first serve basis. More information can be found by emailing groups@frogtowncurling.org.
“Winters are long, cold, and dark here in Minnesota. We aim to help liven that up and celebrate this 500-plus-year-old game and the opportunities it provides for activity and its time-honored tradition of socializing with your opponents, all in the spirit of curling. Competition can be fierce, but every game begins and ends with a handshake, good shots are cheered for all, and sportsmanship rules the day. As curlers, we think there is no better way to spend the winter,” said the Minnesota Curling Association in a news release.
Minnesota has the largest regional association of curlers in the country with around 6,000 curlers in 35 clubs.
To celebrate the 2nd Annual Curling Day in Minnesota, many of these clubs are holding open houses, demonstrations and the opportunity to learn and watch the game.
A free open house will be held Sunday at the association’s anchor location, the Four Seasons Curling Club at Fogerty Arena in Blaine at 9250 Lincoln Street Northeast. Experienced curlers will introduce people to the sport and provide the opportunity to try it out.
The Bemidji Curling Club is hosting the association’s 2025 State Club Championship and will crown the men’s and women’s champion teams Sunday afternoon. Those winners will go on to participate in the USA Curling Club National Championship in Milwaukee in March.
Curling Day also kicks off the USA Curling National Championship in Duluth that takes place Jan. 28 through Feb. 2.
