Defy winter with these great skin & hair savers

It’s frigid and snowy and the winds are blustery. And we have at least six more weeks of this. Isn’t this the perfect time for a little beauty pick-me-up? Here are some new hair and makeup trends and products that can keep us from looking like we’ve been walloped by winter.

One skin product I love is Dollskin Genius Tinted Serum Primer ($36 on doll10.com). It’s a silky, vegan and hypoallergenic layer that comes in six shades. It blurs pores and fine lines and conceals redness (so it’s especially terrific for winter skin if you’ll be out in the cold). But it’s also packed with energizing plant-based ingredients like Oat B Glucan, which repair and stave off dryness and itchiness. You can use your fingers to apply it, or blend even more seamlessly with the ultra-soft Skin Buffing Brush ($36 on doll10.com. The tint generally lasts all day, but if you decide you want more coverage, it’s designed to work well with your favorite foundation.

Another huge trend of note is the nude, barely-there makeup look, and one brand doing it particularly well right now is Rinna Beauty. They’ve rolled out The Birthday Suit Lip Kit & Better Naked Eye Kit ($89 on amazon.com). The set includes seven everyday essentials, including a mocha-brown eye crayon that slides on smooth as can be and wears long; a creamy, natural brown lip liner; the brand’s “No Filter” Lip Gloss that has a gorgeous slight shimmer and moisturizes like nobody’s business; and my favorite — the Better Naked Quad Shadow Palette. Because the shadows include a matte chocolate and sparkly coral in the mix, the blended shades add a bigger-than-usual dash of glam to the nude trend.

On the hair front, our tresses need an added dose of nourishment right now. The mix of cold air, low humidity, and intense wind has a tendency to rob hair of its natural moisture. The results can be frizz, breakage, and a drab lifelessness.

One way to bring back the vibrancy you’re looking for is with a treatment like Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-in Nourishing Treatment ($44 on credobeauty.com), a lightweight and buildable, silicone-free serum that moisturizes and softens. It also repairs damage and protects against breakage. Nourishing oils and shea butter detangle and soften your hair, and add noticeable shine. (Bonus: It smells divine, courtesy of a blend of sandalwood, bergamot, vanilla, and jasmine.)

And then there’s hair styling. The cold weather can make it tempting to just wash our hair and call it a day. Not so fast. There are nifty cutting edge products that make the effort worthwhile. For example: The dual-temperature tech behind the T3 Volumizing Hot Rollers Luxe Set ($149.99 on t3micro.com) is a game changer. They heat up incredibly fast, and the velvet rollers (there are eight) are easy to wrap and bring shine and help contain flyaways. And best of all, the hold brought by its T3 HeatCore technology is unusually strong, with a body and volume that, yes, even the strongest winds can’t mess with.
