The Bengals have hired Patriots offensive line coach Scott Peters and assistant offensive line coach Michael McCarthy to the same positions, the team announced Monday.

Peters and McCarthy leave after just one season in New England, where new head coach Mike Vrabel is conducting a search for a new offensive coordinator.

Peters arrived after spending four years with offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt in Cleveland. He worked as the Browns’ assistant offensive line coach from 2020-2023. Last season was Peters’ first as a lead position coach in the NFL.

Under Peters’ leadership, the Patriots’ offensive line ranked as the league’s worst run-blocking unit by multiple metrics and among the worst pass-protecting groups in the NFL. Lack of talent also factored into the line’s performance, especially after Week 1 starting left tackle Chukwuma Okorafor got benched 12 snaps into his Patriots tenure and left the organization, after which injuries and inexperience sank the rest of the group.

“Scott is a great fit for our offense,” Bengals coach Zac Taylor said in a statement. “He is passionate about the position, and has done a great job of both developing young players and helping veteran players continue to grow. He is familiar with the AFC North and knows what it takes to win in our division. I am excited to have him on our staff.”

Peters and McCarthy are the latest offensive assistants to leave, after ESPN reported last Friday running backs coach Taylor Embree, wide receivers Tyler Hughes, assistant wide receivers coach Tiquan Underwood and tight ends coach Bob Bicknell are moving on. A source confirmed to the Herald that Hughes will not return.
