Division 4 track relays: Wakefield eclipses the field
BOSTON – As he took the baton in the final leg of the 4×400 meter relay at the Division 4 Indoor Track relays, Wakefield runner Brody Wyatt knew the fate of his team’s chances at victory were in his hands.
Entering the race, Wakefield held a 36-35 lead over Pembroke but with the two teams neck and neck on the track, the winner would ultimately claim the title.
“Terrified,” Wyatt said of his emotions. “This is my senior year and I wanted it more than anything else.”
He would maintain the lead for the two laps and helped his Warriors claim a narrow 47-43 victory over the Titans. Medfield finished third with 33 points while Norton and Old Rochester rounded out the top five with 27 and 26 points respectively.
“That’s the way you want to win these things,” Wakefield head coach Ruben Reinoso said. “That kids were fired up, we beat an unbelievable team. All the effort that these guys have done, I am so proud of them. This is by far the hardest meet to win.”
The 4×400 meter relay was the only event the Warriors claimed first in. However, strong finishes throughout the 10 events helped the program rack up points and claim the victory.
“We really wanted this for everyone,” 4x400m racer Isaac Melo said. “I knew that I had to push myself for them because they pushed themselves for me.
As the relay team prepared for the fateful finale, racer Aidan Burd said they were focused on picking each other up and working as a team.
“Just set it up for the next guy,” Burd said. “Just do our job, get it done.”
On the girls’ side, Holliston claimed their second consecutive victory in the event with a 68-point showing. Newburyport finished second with 58 points and Pembroke rounded out the top three with 56.5 points.
“We have a deep team,” Panthers head coach Jennifer Moreau said. “Everyone is giving their 100 percent effort and showing willingness to do events that they wouldn’t normally do.”
Moreau said several of the participants took on events out of their comfort zones to help the team clinch the victory. Holliston was one of the only teams to field participants in every event.
“It’s an awesome feeling to have athletes that can rise to the occasion,” Moreau said. “This is one of our favorite meets to attend and I am proud of our leadership.”
The Panthers won the long jump, distance medley relay and the 1600-meter small medley relay. The team also finished second in three other events and earned points in nine of the 10 events.
“Everyone gave it their best,” senior captain Annabell Lynch said. “Especially on the third events of the day, it can be exhausting but we have given everything we have left.”
As the Panthers celebrated their second straight title and second in program history, the captains reflected on the culture being built.
“Coming off of winning it last year for the first time in program history, it’s a really hard thing to do,” senior captain Kaitlin Quealy said. “We really just came together as a team and that is something to be celebrated today.”
