Division 2 track: North Andover boys win seventh straight title, Wellesley girls rule
The MSTCA’s James Kapelris Indoor Relays are considered a midseason checkpoint where schools can gauge whether their track and field teams are legitimate contenders.
In the 56th installment of the event, Annie Comella, Sara Gander and Tara Battaglino made history Saturday in the long jump competition. The trio shattered a meet record, finishing with a combined distance of 15.19 meters as Wellesley captured the Div. 2 girls indoor relay crown with 46 points.
“Those girls put in great efforts together,” said Wellesley coach John Griffith. “That’s why we love this meet. It’s a bunch of girls together, working as a team collectively with all the relays put together. It’s a great team for us, so we’re excited where we’re at.”
The long jump record unseated a prior mark that had stood since 2003. As usual, Comella served as a primary standout for the Raiders. The Michigan commit also joined Ava O’Grady, Emma Tuxbury and Kayla Bohlin later at the decisive 4×400-meter relay, in which the school placed first (4:06.25) to seal the crown.
Wellesley also registered a win in the distance medley relay (12:52.17), with Maddie Tuxbury, Sydney Kim, Madeleine Coggins and Bridget Reidy pacing the charge. When the dust settled, the Raiders had edged runner-up Woburn by five points.
“It’s a great feeling,” said Griffith. “We came into this meet feeling good about ourselves. I thought the energy here in the building was great, and I thought it really helped our kids compete. Woburn gave us a great test, but it’s always nice to see the different teams that we’re going to see down the road in the divisional. We’re excited about the win, and certainly to close it out with the 4×400. Winning it and taking that home was a great way to finish it out.”
Meanwhile, Ben Iglesias, Joshua Quijada, Trevor Hunter and Ajani Muzasadila blazed to a winning time of 22.12 seconds in the 4×50-yard relay, as North Andover continued its dynastic run by capturing its seventh consecutive Div. 2 boys indoor relay crown.
The Scarlet Knights finished with 56 points. The school won the shuttle hurdle relay (26.74 seconds), with Nate Solivan, Aidan McGarry, Trey Kean and Santi Alvarez combining for an epic performance.
Quite a birthday present for North Andover coach Jason Guarente, who turned 34 Saturday.
“We love our depth for our team,” Guarente said. “We had a couple of ‘B’ teams score in the high jump and in the shot put, which is awesome. It’s a team event, and we look forward to this meet every single year. The team came together, and came through.”
Other noteworthy performances included Reading’s Chris Barbato, Clay Chase and Cameron Gigler, who played roles during the Rockets’ wins in the boys 4×800 (8:05.36) and 4×400 (3:29.77) relays. Logan Sullivan of Hopkinton dazzled fans during the boys long jump relay with a mighty individual leap (2.03 meters), working with Mohamed Baba and Matthew Bernadin for a victory (5.36).
