Editorial: No sanctuary for rapists!

Illegal immigration has been a punching bag for opportunistic Democrats.

It’s one of the reasons President-elect Donald Trump is heading back into the Oval Office. Democrats refuse to admit they’ve gone terribly wrong. Here’s one reason why:

Brazilian national Agnaldo Moreira da Cruz, 29, was set free — twice! — by Cape Cod authorities after he was arrested on felony charges of rape and extortion with threat of injury.

The local arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tied to Enforcement and Removal Operations Boston (ERO) slapped a detainer on this suspect. It was ignored.

This is where Democrats are wrong. Anyone illegally in America who faces rape and extortion charges should be deported immediately. That suspect likely preyed on the immigrant community, past examples clearly tell, and there should be no haven for them here. Period.

The border is broken and has been for a long time. But when ICE asks that a jail or court keep a suspect locked up until they can come grab him, it should be a no-brainer. “Will do,” should be the only answer.

Scoring political points off sanctuary city policies is an excuse that goes against common sense. Trump will bring order to the border.

His border czar Tom Homan has clearly stated there is no wiggle room for illegal immigrant criminals in the U.S.

After years of confusion, having clear lines is welcome. It’s the rule of law.

Moreira Da Cruz was allowed to walk out of the Barnstable County Correctional Facility and subsequently the Barnstable Superior Court, ICE said in a statement. That’s two outrages wrapped in one.

“Moreira Da Cruz has been accused of very serious violent felonies, including rape and extortion with threat of injury. This is not someone you want to release into the community, but twice now our detainers have been ignored. Most recently, the Barnstable Superior Court ignored their own court order requiring that he be returned to our custody. These decisions have repeatedly put the citizens of Massachusetts at risk of being victimized by an alleged dangerous offender,” ICE said in a statement last week.

Moreira da Cruz remains in ICE custody “pending immigration and criminal proceedings,”  officials added.

ICE stated: “ERO removes noncitizens who have no lawful basis to remain in the U.S., including those who are subject to final removal orders from Department of Justice immigration judges working with the Executive Office for Immigration Review.”

Enough is enough. Rapists, drug dealers, murderers, and other violent criminals should be sent back.

Immigration has been abused. That must stop.
