Bruins notebook: B’s need to build on win in Florida
The Bruins’ overtime win over the Florida Panthers provided a brief moment of joy in what has been a miserable January.
But that’s it. Time to move on. The B’s six-game losing streak has made tenuous their hold on a playoff spot. A mere two points separates them from the Ottawa Senators, who are currently just on the outside of the playoff bracket looking in – and the Sens have three games in hand.
The B’s need to go on a run, And it’s not like getting outshot 42-18, as they did in Florida, is anything to hang their helmets on.
“It’s a one-off,” said captain Brad Marchand of the win in Sunrise. “You don’t ever want to look at that and say that ‘We’re back’ type deal. It’s a good opportunity to beat a really good team. They’re very deep, they play hard. It was a good test for us. We faced some adversity in that game that we got through. But iit doesn’t mean that everything’s going to be right moving forward. It’s still about how we prepare today and practice and how we’re going to practice tomorrow morning and play (Tuesday) night. It’s always about building. You never want to get too high or too low. One game isn’t going to change the season, one way or another. It was a great win for our group. It’s great to get back in the win column. But there are still areas to improve. We didn’t have a great game but ultimately wins are what matters. Sometimes you lose those games that you deserved to win.”
One area that the B’s can improve on is the play of Marchand’s line with Elias Lindholm and Charlie Coyle. Since having his 11-game point streak snapped, Marchand has just two assist and no goals and is minus-10 in the last eight games. Lindholm has a goal and an assist and is minus-8 and Coyle has just one assist and is minus-2 in that time. There have been some empty-net goals against that hhave hurt the players in the Dash Department, but it hasn’t been great.
Coach Joe Sacco said that part of the reason is that he’s leaned on that line play against some of the opposition’s top lines, like Sasha Barkov’s line in Florida, Nikita Kucherov’s line with Tampa and Connor McDavid’s line with Edmonton. He said the line needs to make some of those top lines defend more in their own zone more.
“It’s probably taking away from some of their offense,” said Sacco after Monday’s practice. “It’s not an excuse but that’s what I see.”
Marchand was more blunt.
“We just haven’t been good enough,” said Marchand. “We’re spending lot more time in the D-zone that we would like to and been on the wrong side of it. It’s just about continuing to move forward and building every day. We have to find ways to support each other in the D-zone, offensively through the neutral zone. And the when we get in the offensive zone, we have to manage it a little bit better and value possession and hopefully that will turn the tides.”
The captain’s message for the team has been of the steady-as-she-goes variety and stay as locked in on the little things of the game that makes a difference.
“You can’t be caught up on losing steaks and all that,” said Marchand. “I think the biggest thing is we have to continue to do is understand how important every detail is when you’re going through stretches like this, when you’re not scoring the way you want to and you’re letting too many goals in, you really ave to bear down on the little things. The compete level has to be a little bit higher and you’ve got to work through it. Eventually it’s going to turn and you’ll be better for it as a group but we do have to work our way out if it and show the character we’ve always shown. But we have the belief in the room and I like the way we’ve been competing the last couple of days.”
One of the best ways to mitigate scoring challenges is to capitalize on your power-play chances. The B’s issues on the PP have been as well known as they’ve been Herculean. They’re 30th in the league at 13.2%. But they popped in two PP goals on Saturday in Florida. That included the game-winner, which was a David Pastrnak’s flukish tally that went off Sam Reinhart’s stick.
But the B’s will take the mental boost any way they can get it.
“It definitely plays on your mind and on your confidence on the power play,” said Marchand. “A couple of bounces can help you build that back slowly. But also, it’s the same thing. We don’t always have success because we don’t always outwork the penalty kill. That’s where it needs to start.”…
After the B’s waived Marc McLaughlin on Sunday (he cleared on Monday), they called up veteran wing Vinni Lettieri, who leads Providence in scoring with 14-21-35 totals in 35 game. Though Sacco said that the practice lines may not hold for Tuesday’s rematch with Tampa at the Garden, Lettieri skated on a line with Trent Frederic and Oliver Wahlstrom on Monday.
The 29-year-old Lettieri was with the organization two years ago and earned a call-up but he suffered a lower body injury in his first practice and was missed a stretch of time.
“It was obviously frustrating but again it’s just a bump in the road,” said Lettieri. “I just look toward the big man above and he’s everything for me. Whether it’s the injury that time, it’s all panning itself out. I’m sitting here again in this locker room. Everything happens for a reason. I just have to trust His plan, come ready to play and win games.”
While some fans may have been hoping for one of the younger prospects like Fabian Lysell or Matt Poitras to get the call, it’s not like Lettieri hasn’t earned it.
“Vinni’s played very well in Providence, their leading scorer and he deserves an opportunity to come up and play. Marc did fine when he was here. He held his own and did his job but guys need to get rewarded as well when they play well,” said Sacco…
Mark Kastelic, who wobbled in a fracas in Tampa after he took a crosscheck to the chin last week, has been ruled out for the Tuesday’s game against the Lightning.
