Medfield ends busy week by skating past rival Norwood, 3-1

NORWOOD – Whenever Medfield clashes with Norwood in hockey, a classic is always a possibility.

In the latest installment of the rivalry Saturday, Charles Breslin, Ben Lusby and Luke Dickson tallied goals and Charles Duggan recorded his eighth victory in net as Medfield upended its Tri-Valley League rivals with a 3-1 win at The Skating Club of Boston.

“We knew what we had to do,” Lusby said. “Our team, we’re very tight. We trust each other, and we knew what we had to do. We just went out there, got it done. Got pucks deep, forechecked really hard, and put pucks in the back of the net.”

Playing their fourth game in a week, the Warriors (9-0-1) started the game shaky, struggling to maintain any sort of offensive possession. Meanwhile, the Mustangs (4-2-0) appeared unstoppable in the early going, registering six of the first seven shots. However, the only piece that matters is the scoreboard, and Medfield would draw first blood as Breslin slipped the puck inside the right post to make it a 1-0 contest with 12:57 left in the stanza.

Later on in waning minutes of the opening period, Norwood was assessed a cross-checking penalty. The Warriors would convert on the man advantage, as Lusby fed a pass to John Shaughnessy. In tic-tac-toe fashion, Lusby skated into the slot as his teammate fired the puck right back. The senior tripped as he uncorked a one-timer, but still sniped the cage as his team extended it to a 2-0 game.

“I lost balance a little bit,” laughed Lusby. “My teammate, John Shaughnessy, he set me up really nice. Can’t ask for better teammates.”

The score would hold well into the final period. With his team still locked in a nail-biter, Dickson decided to take matters into his own hands. The freshman skated up the right wing nonchalantly, as the Mustangs scurried to set up defensively. Dickson paused, then fired a wrist shot right over the goaltender’s shoulder for the decisive dagger as Medfield built an insurmountable 3-0 advantage.

“To be honest, I did not want to skate it up at all,” said Dickson. “I was so tired skating up the ice, I kind of slowed down. But then I just saw a lane. So I just went up, tried to get it on net, and it went in.”

Norwood was led by senior captain Mark Trahon, who buried a goal through traffic with 40.9 seconds remaining. Decorated Mustangs coach Chuck Allen was honored prior to the game for winning his 100th career game with the program.

“I’ve known Chuck for a really long time because I actually live in Norwood,” said first-year Medfield coach Jon Jepson. “I built this rink here, where they were playing. So, I’ve gotten to know Chuck for years, see how well his teams play. (They) always play hard. You know they’re coming hard for three periods. We knew it was going to be tough from the beginning, and it was.”
