Red Sox invite seven prospects to annual Rookie Development Program
Seven top prospects will participate in next week’s annual Red Sox Rookie Development Program, which is designed to help prepare young players assimilate into big league life on and off the field.
This year’s participants include shortstop Marcelo Mayer, outfielders Roman Anthony and Jhostynxon Garcia, infielder/outfielder Kristian Campbell, catcher Carlos Narvaez and right-handers Hunter Dobbins and David Sandlin.
Mayer, Anthony and Campbell are the club’s consensus top three prospects and are all regarded as top 25 prospects in the sport. Anthony is currently ranked No. 1 on Baseball America’s Top 100 list, Mayer is ranked No. 10 and Campbell is No. 24. Mayer and Anthony also took part in last year’s rookie program, while Campbell burst onto the scene from relative obscurity last year to emerge as one of the game’s fastest rising young stars.
Garcia was another breakout star in the Red Sox system last season, hitting a career-high 23 home runs while rising from Low-A Salem to Double-A Portland. Garcia and Dobbins were added to the 40-man roster in November to protect them from being taken in the Rule 5 Draft, and both are expected to be in consideration for big league opportunities at some point this coming season.
Narvaez and Sandlin are both recent trade acquisitions expected to make an impact in the near future. Narvaez was acquired this winter from the New York Yankees, and though he’s only appeared in six MLB games, he’s drawn rave reviews for his defense and pitch framing and currently projects as Boston’s back-up catcher behind Connor Wong on Opening Day. Sandlin was acquired from the Kansas City Royals during spring training last year for right-hander John Schreiber and ranks as Boston’s No. 7 prospect.
All seven prospects, plus right-hander Luis Perales, are also scheduled to appear at Fenway Fest in Boston on Saturday.
