Trump calls for ‘powerful’ omnibus bill, House leadership says they’re working on it

Republicans should get in line and support President-elect Donald Trump’s policy goals by offering a single “powerful” bill, the incoming commander-in-chief declared.

In a late Sunday Truth Social post, the soon-to-be 47th President of the United States said he wants to see an omnibus bill on his desk “as soon as possible.”

“Members of Congress are getting to work on one powerful Bill that will bring our Country back, and make it greater than ever before. We must Secure our Border, Unleash American Energy, and Renew the Trump Tax Cuts, which were the largest in History, but we will make it even better,” Trump wrote.

Trump then reiterated a campaign promise to remove taxes on tipped wages, which he declared would be paid for by “tariffs and much more” levied against “countries that have taken advantage of the U.S. for years.”

“Republicans must unite, and quickly deliver these Historic Victories for the American People,” Trump wrote.

The incoming administration seems to have some support in Congress. On Sunday, House Speaker Mike Johnson told Fox News that a bill addressing border security, mass deportation, extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, raising or outright eliminating the debt ceiling, and slashing regulations would be ready by the end of April or May at the latest.

Republicans will move the bill using a process known as “reconciliation,” Johnson said, which would mean it could move through the U.S. Senate with a simple majority.

“No one’s going to love every element of a large package like that but there’ll be enough elements in there to pull everyone along,” Johnson said. “They’ll be able to justify not getting all of their preferences on some of their big issues because there will be so many very important pieces to that one piece of legislation.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise took to social media to say his caucus has started building the bill.

“Congress is already working with President Trump to prepare one powerful bill that will secure America’s border, unleash our energy potential to lower costs and inflation for hardworking families, renew the Trump tax cuts, and reverse the costly and damaging bureaucratic regulations that are slowing down American prosperity. Let’s Make America Great Again,” he wrote.

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy described Trump’s plan as nothing more than an attempt to enrich his donors while putting more of a burden on the working class.

“The deal Trump cut with congressional Republicans was to cut taxes for his billionaire and corporate friends and cut benefits for seniors on Medicare and poor people on Medicaid. That’s the ‘one powerful Bill.’ The rich stealing from you,” he wrote via social media.
