High-flying Sarah White leads Notre Dame (Hingham) past Canton

CANTON – After scoring just two goals in their previous two games, the Notre Dame Cougars erupted for seven goals in a dominant 7-0 victory over Canton.

Sarah White led the team with three goals, improving her total to 94 points on the season. The outburst came after the team fell 2-1 to Hingham on New Year’s Day in the finals of the Tenney Cup and then tied Nauset/Monomoy on Saturday.

Head coach John Findley said the key to the scoring was a commitment to shooting the puck.

“When we shoot and get pucks to the net, good things can happen,” Findley said. “That’s the key to everything. They don’t have to be pretty goals, they just have to be sent to the net.”

Despite the lopsided final score, the first period didn’t feature any scoring. Notre Dame had the bulk of the opportunities but the Cougars struggled to beat Bulldogs freshman goaltender Keagan Gray.

Following the period, White said the team reset in the locker room and changed their mindset.

“In the locker room we all got ourselves going,” White said. “We talked about our mistakes, built off the good plays and just kept it going. We didn’t hold back.”

She got the scoring started early in the second period, finishing a set-up from Chase Harmon after an initial pass from Jocelyn Gray. Minutes later, senior Emily Coughlin tipped in the Cougars second goal.

“We knew we needed a big turnaround, and this was the game for it,” Coughlin said. “We generated offensive chemistry and from there our mindset changed. We need to get grinding and see what is next.”

White would add her second before the period ended and the Cougars entered the final period with a 3-0 lead.

Within the first few minutes, White netted her third of the day. This was followed by goals from Kayla Maguire, Gray and Caroline Hartnett to give the game its final score.

“After our last game we learned it was all about our energy level and our mindset,” Hartnett said. “We had a lot of good plays for every person on the ice and I think that’s what changed.”

The Cougars improved to 4-1-1 and Findley said that with the team back on track they are destined for big things this season.

“This team is probably my best team overall,” Findley said. “Offensively, defensively, they have a lot of cohesion. I thought the girls played really hard tonight.”
