Massachusetts winter weather: Dry but cold, blustery conditions expected this weekend

Massachusetts will be spared the worst of a winter storm set to bring moderate to heavy snow from Kansas City to Washington over the weekend, as dry but cold and blustery weather prevails.

Temperatures will remain right around freezing, with highs between the 30- to 35-degree range for most of the Bay State on Saturday, with colder conditions across higher terrain, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts of 25 to 35 miles per hour, however, will make it feel “even colder than the actual temperatures,” the NWS Boston’s forecast discussion stated Friday evening.

Sunny skies are expected to be met with the winds which are forecast to taper Saturday night but not enough for the blustery conditions to dissipate completely.

The only area that may see some snow is the Berkshires with a “brief passing shower or two,” the NWS forecast shows.

Outdoor enthusiasts didn’t shy away from Friday’s cold conditions, with a score of skiers hitting the slopes at Blue Hills Ski Area.

Major metro areas such as Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. expect several inches of snow later in the weekend and into early next week, according to AccuWeather. Parts of West Virginia and western Maryland are “most likely” to see totals near 15 inches.

The “mid-Atlantic snowstorm will miss us to the south on Monday,” NWS Boston’s forecast discussion stated. “There will be little change in day-to-day weather between Sunday and Friday with high temps ranging from the upper 20s to mid-30s.”
