Massachusetts high school football player regains consciousness after ‘traumatic brain injury’
A Massachusetts high school football player who suffered a “traumatic brain injury” during his school’s Thanksgiving game has started to regain consciousness and has been transferred to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital for “continued recovery.”
Sharon sophomore Rohan Shukla collapsed on the sidelines during a game against Oliver Ames on Nov. 28 after an “injury during play,” as described by district officials. Shukla was rushed to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton before being taken to Massachusetts General in Boston.
Shukla’s parents, Abhishek and Deepika, provided an update on their son’s condition through a GoFundMe that has raised $79,510 from 960 donations.
“After spending 35 days at Mass General Hospital, Rohan transitioned to a Neuro Rehab (Spaulding in Boston) for continued recovery,” the update states, posted by fundraiser organizer Same Letendre. “Though Rohan is still in very early stages of regaining consciousness, it’s a significant milestone for him and we are hoping of better days for him here on.”
“This is going to be a prolonged in-patient recovery for Rohan,” it adds, “please continue to support this campaign to provide him best chance at recovery and lead a quality life.”
Doctors at Mass General diagnosed Shukla with subdural hematoma, a collection of blood that forms between the skull and brain, Letendre reported in an update on Dec. 14. By the time he received surgery to control the bleeding, Shukla’s brain had suffered “severe injuries,” Letendre added.
Superintendent Peter J. Botelho and High School Principal Kristen Keenan wrote a letter to the community on Nov. 30, offering their “heartfelt support” to Shukla and his family “during this incredibly difficult time.”
